Donald Knuth Rides a Bike and Believes in God

A very interesting interview with Donald Knuth was discussed on Slashdot this morning (if you didn't notice). Knuth is one of the seminal figures in the Computer Science field. He started writing a series of books called, "The Art of Computer Programming" back in the sixties which the interview discusses primarily. He also invented a typesetting system called TeX which was also discussed although I don't think they mentioned the name. The most interesting tidbits came near the end of the interview where he mentioned that he rides a bike and (surprise) believes in God. Well, in some ways this is not surprising. Back when I was in school and during a class called Philosophy of Science, I discovered that of all the sciences, mathematicians are the most likely to believe in God. The interview doesn't discuss what preference he might have with regard to his faith but I assume since he is an avid lover of Pipe Organs (even has one in his house), he must be some sort of protestant?

Space Station at L1?

In this article, Buzz Aldrin is proposing a space launching pad located at L1. This is a point between the earth and the moon where gravitation is equalized and it would be easy to launch space vehicles to other parts of the solar system. It's an interesting idea. He also proposes using some of the current system instead of scraping it and even more interesting, he proposes forming an alliance with the Chinese. It's very unique and original thinking. Something we need more of by our policy makers don't you think?

50 Year Anniversary of Piltdown Man

Thanks to Mere Comments for this link. Piltdown man was supposed to be the missing link in the evolutionary chain between man and ape. But there's more. The article details the top 10 scientific hoaxes of all time. Piltdown Man is number one. But what is surprising to me is that many of these hoaxes were created by supposed scientists.

Buffalo Sized Rodents

Evidence of large, guinea pig like rodents has recently been found in the region of the Urumaco fossil fields of Venezuela. The fascinating article mentions that this is an area which is rich in fossils and was thought to be part of a huge tropical forest. Here's a quote:
For millions of years, Fleagle said, South America was an "island continent"
where "all sorts of strange creatures developed in isolation." Suddenly,
"between 30 [million] and 25 million years ago, primates and rodents appeared
out of nowhere and radiated all over the continent."

Of course, no explanation is given for these "out of nowhere" scenarios. How does this fit within the theory of Darwinian natural selection which requires millions of years for the simplest genetic change to occur (such as an extra finger or an extra vertebra)?
