1. What does your URL mean, kc0dxf?

   It is my amateur radio call sign. I hold a general class amateur radio license. I once talked to a guy in England on my radio while driving to work. I have also communicated with people using morse code. I think I talked with someone in the Netherlands once using this mode one time. Another interesting event was to listen to the shuttle astronauts talk with some grade school students while the shuttle passed over. Many of the astronauts are licensed operators and they like to talk on the radio when they have free time. I don't do radio a whole lot anymore although I still have a couple of radio's in the house. My wife Luz also has a technicians license, her call sign is kc0gal. Amateur radio is also known as HAM radio. When you first get started in HAM radio, you usually have someone who helps you learn and practices with you. This person is called an Elmer. My Elmer is my good friend Bill who is ka0yko.

2. Tell us about meeting your wife. You once mentioned that it was through your church, but how did the Lord bring you together?

   Well, I was part of the Mid-County Church of Christ for almost twenty years. The church featured the Spiritual Internship program which was a program designed to teach Christians to be better ministers in their vocational area. Many people who came through the program formed groups and went to different parts of the country and world to start churches. In the mid 80's (don't remember the year exactly), four young couples who had studied the bible at Abilene Christian university came to the program and decided that God had called them to go to Thailand to start a church. In order to train, this group started a bible study on the campus of Washington University at the international student center. Luz started going to this study and became good friends with Tim and Cherry (one of the four couples). After several months, Luz came to faith and started attending Mid-County. So we started getting friendly at Church and then going out on dates and in general spending a lot of time together. I'm a real sucker for both Filipinos and Latin Americans so I was taken by Luz pretty quickly. All she had to do was put her spell on me with those big dark eyes and that sealed the deal!

3. One more: How did you propose? (I'm a girl, I love proposal stories)

   Luz (pronounced loose, the Spanish word for light) had a room-mate who was an avid runner. So Luz liked to go running too and we did some runs and jogs together once in a while. On one occasion we were going to jog and then have dinner afterwords. I put the ring in my bag. After we finished running and we were in the house with some friends of hers, I took the ring out and said something like, "look at this." Luz's two friends (an older couple) were a bit shocked and surprised as well as Luz! Then I popped the question and fortunately for me, she accepted! Not the most romantic proposal I guess, but it was fun.

4. How's Kristina doing?

   Thanks for asking and sorry I haven't updated the blog much on her lately. She is doing very well, thanks to God. She is a very happy little baby and seems to really get a kick out of her daddy. She smiles at me almost every time I look at her. It is really humbling to have a little child that adores you like that. Her therapy is almost completed and she has responded very well to it and the operation. Thanks to everyone who prayed for her.

5. What three books would top your book recommendations and why?
   • Willing to Believe by R. C. Sproul
     This book had a very profound effect on me (as well as RC's radio ministry). I remember reading this book very carefully. After I had finished, I really was convinced that I had to visit a Reformed church to see what this was all about. I become concerned that the brand of Christianity that I had practiced for so long might actually be on the wrong side of the Reformation. I recommend this book to anyone wanting to have a better understanding of not only Reformed theology but the primary issues of the Reformation.
   • The Democratization of American Christianity by Nathan O. Hatch.
     This is a book that Pastor Meyers recommended to me. It will give you a good view of the second great awakening. It also helped me put a better perspective on Alexander Campbell, Barton Stone, and the Restoration movement of the 1800s. I also really devoured this book when I read it.
   • The Paleo Diet by Dr. Loren Cordain
     If you are thinking about how to make your diet healthier, I recommend this book. There are a couple of things in here that some Christians will find troubling. He harps on evolution lot. But the evolution he is speaking of is micro, not macro. That is, the amount of time the human species has eaten the foods that they do and how our bodies are adapted to use the foods. The other issue is that he obviously believes that humans have been on the earth for thousands of years and this would be problematic to a young earther. I don't know exactly how to get around this as I'm an old earther but perhaps you can just say the age is an appearance and it doesn't necessarily effect the other evidence that is presented. At any rate, this book makes a lot of sense to me. I haven't adopted it totally but we are gradually making changes to incorporate some of the main suggestions. For one thing, I eat much more fruit these days.
