The Good Health Pill
There is a pill which is by far a better promoter of
good health than anything else on the market. This
pill improves cardio and arterial health, improves
muscle and joint health, fights cancer and Alzheimer's
disease. It is remarkable in it's overall effects on
the body. What is it you ask? Details are
here
and the prescription might be obvious. Here's a quote:
"If exercise could be made into a pill, it would be the most-prescribed pill we
have," said Cedric Bryant, an exercise physiologist and a vice president (for
educational services) with the American Council on Exercise in San Diego.
"It affects virtually every system in the body," chimed in Catherine Jackson,
who chairs the department of kinesiology at California State University in
Fresno.
The power of physical activity came home to her in an experiment she conducted
a few years ago. She listed the effects of inactivity and those of aging. They
were nearly identical.
"Some of the things that occur to you as you get older won't occur as soon if
you are active," she said. "A lot of people have said exercise is as close to a
fountain of youth as you're going to get."
Indeed, it would be hard to overstate the impact of exercise on human health.
But exactly what happens when you get up from your chair and shake it?

Resveratrol in Grape Juice?
We had some friends over recently for dinner and, while I offered
them some red wine (Pinot Noir), I also related the amazing qualities
of the Resveratrol molecule found in red wine and some other
foods (which I have mentioned before here). The question came up as to whether
or not grape juice
has Resveratrol. Grape juice is frequently mentioned in ads on
the radio as being just as good as wine. While it may have some
anti-oxidant properties, I don't think you can say it is going to
have as much Resveratrol as a glass of red wine (particularly a wine
from the Bordeaux region or a Pinot Noir). A little searching
revealed this good overview of Resveratrol at the Linus Pauling
institute which mentions grape juice. And this article in the Boston globe which seems to say that
generally no, grape juice is not as good a source of Resveratrol as
red wine.

Sardi on Aging and Longevity
Bill Sardi's most recent news blast,
Living Long, Looking Young, is
interesting in several ways. First off to some of my friends and
readers who suggest that Sardi is pro-supplement biased, notice
that right away he makes mention of the FTC disclosure of a growth hormone
scam which resulted in $70 million of spending on a particular dietary
supplement claiming to elevate growth hormone. Also notice that
the two most effective ways of promoting longevity which he lists are
calorie restricted dieting and red wine. Neither of these involve
supplements. Just some food for thought for some of you who may be
immediately turning off any info coming from this direction.
There are several other things in this report I found interesting.
Here's a few:
- The distinction between living longer and looking younger.
These are not really the same thing although lots of information
out there would lead you to believe that they are. One can live longer
than average but still look very old.
- There are three pockets of longevity in the world which
are known. One in Japan due to CR diet, the other two in France
and Italy due to red wine consumption.
- The active molecule in red wine is called resveratrol. It
is also found in some berries. Supplements based on resveratrol
are problematic as the molecule can be oxidized easily and turns into
a less active cis (converting from trans) form.
- Hyaluronic acid is suggested as a molecule which can treat
skin, wrinkles and hair loss issues. Sardi suggests that
oral supplements can be effective and that doctors do not
seem to be aware of this.
- Human growth hormone injection is effective but very expensive for
anti aging treatment.
- I have added some links to CR diet to my delicious links on
the right. One interesting resource I found was a suggestion that
Barry Sears Zone diet is a good introductory diet for starting
a CR approach.
